Ruskin Museum Makeover week at Meersbrook Hall

Ruskin Museum Makeover at Meersbrook Hall 20th to 26th October

Meersbrook Hall is open to the public for a week of free events and activities for adults and children to find out about the life and legacy of the Ruskin Museum at Meersbrook Hall (1890-1953).

The Ruskin Museum Makeover week is free and open every day from Sat 20th to Friday 26th October, different times every day:

Sat 20th Oct 2pm - 9pm.

Sun 21st Oct 11am - 4pm.

Mon 22nd Oct 9am - 5pm.

Tues 23rd Oct 9am - 5pm.

Weds 24th Oct 9am - 9pm.

Thurs 25th Oct 9am - 9pm.

Fri 26th Oct 9am - 5pm.

For one week only, some of the former rooms of the Ruskin Museum will be transformed by exciting displays and artworks inspired by fascinating new research into the Museum’s past.

The powerful connection between Sheffield’s Master Cutlers and the Ruskin Collection at Meersbrook will be revealed, as well as how the Museum was at the centre of a thriving Sheffield Ruskin Club, and national Ruskin Union network at the end of the 19th Century. Visitors will be able to see examples of artwork by early- 20th century curator Genevieve Pilley, the best manuscript illumination artist in Sheffield in her time (and one of the best in the country), and creator of a number of Royal Addresses.

Historical coverage from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph will be on show to help reveal this untold story, and some of the original artworks and furniture from the Meersbrook Museum will be on rare display too.

Children from Carfield Primary School, architecture students from the University of Sheffield, local volunteers and professional artists have all created displays following their own research into the Ruskin Museum’s past. Ideas for Meersbrook Hall’s future will be brought to life during the week too - which visitors can add to.

Visitors can also try a range of free activities, including illuminated lettering, wire sculpture, nature drawing, or piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of the Ruskin Collection’s enormous painting of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

The Ruskin Museum Makeover at Meersbrook Hall week has been made possible through a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) award, thanks to money raised by National Lottery Players. The project is a collaboration between the Guild of St George, Heeley Trust and Friends of Meersbrook Hall.

Special events include outdoor projections onto the Hall on Sat 20th Oct at 7pm; new heritage talks about the Ruskin Museum on Weds 24th Oct at 7pm, and a Ruskin Art Workshop for adults on Thurs 25th Oct at 7pm. No booking required for any events, just turn up. Meersbrook Hall is accessed via the upper entrance to Meersbrook Park on Brook Road, S8 9FL. More details at www.ruskininsheffield.com.
