How would you define yourself?

Artist, Landscape Painter

Julian Perry

Please describe yourself and your areas of interest.

After studying painting in Maidenhead and Bristol (U.W.E) I live and work in Suffolk and East London UK. I am a member of the dynamic artists society Contemporary British Painting. My works explore the good and the bad in man’s complex and often dysfunctional relationship to the landscape. Brownfield sites, nature reserves, caravan parks and allotment sheds have all been subjects for shows. Recent works have looked at rising sea levels as an expression of Climate Change and the wider ecological crisis. My painting techniques are indebted to art history, borrowing from the pre-impressionist skills of the old masters. My works are held in numerous public collections and have won major British Council and Arts Council England awards. In 2015 my work on coastal erosion impacting Britain’s East coast featured in the Venice Biennale. In 2022 Southampton City Art Gallery staged a major one person show. In the future I will be collaborating with Britten Pears Arts at Snape Maltings, Suffolk.

Why did you become a Companion of the Guild?

Couched in acute observation, there seems a natural overlap between my extremely technical and craft-based paintings and the interests of Ruskin. Equally my enthusiasm for collaboration and exchange through public engagement programs would probably have met with his approval. At best my shows create a dynamic exchange between me and the local audience, who very often give profound and unpredictable insights. This is an aspect of my work that membership of the Guild should help develop.
