Shannon Gale

Please describe yourself and your areas of interest.

I'm an artist and painter, mother of two boys, both artists, one a photographer and the other a painter and film maker, continuing an unbroken line of artists for 200 years in a family tree of British painters, musicians and writers, many with connections to Ruskin. My great grandfather is Joseph Severn, artist and friend to Keats. My Uncle is Arthur Severn, married to Joan Agnew, Ruskin's niece. My areas of interest are art, art history research and art education and design. With a background working in film and as photo stylist in fashion and interiors, published in magazines and design books. I've been active in Museum affiliated art programs, as well as Docent. Recently, my primary focus has been painting and drawing. I founded a life drawing artist co-op, with an emphasis on the figure en plein air. My artwork is primarily figurative, seascapes, and landscapes.

Why did you become a Companion of the Guild?

I'm seeking global connection to a community of engaged Ruskin students and ideas. Ruskin's connection to my family was uncovered by generous Keats' and Ruskin Scholars and various Institutions. There's a wealth of information on my family, their illustrious circle of friends and the profound influences of Ruskin. Ruskin's teachings enriched my life, inspired me to leave the world a more beautiful place and to be of service. I hope to contribute as a Companion of the Guild by preserving Ruskin ideals, furthering research and documentation for the next generation. As a Companion, I hope to pay it forward by contributing my time and resources to The Guild of St. George.
