2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the Ruskin Collection. It is also the bicentenary of the birth of the collection’s first curator, Henry Swan, who was ably assisted in his museum work by his wife, Emily. In celebration, Companion and former Guild Secretary Stuart Eagles has written and published the first full biography of the Swans.
Using previously unpublished archive material, and some long-forgotten images, the book explores the lives of two of Ruskin’s most dedicated and consequential disciples. Stuart reveals previously unknown facts about the Swans’ lives, their relationship with Ruskin, and the work of St George’s Museum at Walkley.
The author has generously gifted the proceeds of any sales via this website to the Guild and its work.
