Guglielmo Magnifichi

Please describe yourself and your areas of interest.

I am an art and architectural historian currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on Venice and the reception of Venetian material culture in nineteenth-century Britain, particularly the collecting and display of Venetian architectural fragments in British houses, gardens, and museums between 1850 and 1910, and the influence of John Ruskin. My wider interests include architectural history, the decorative arts, heritage, collecting, and the Arts and Crafts movement.

Why did you become a Companion of the Guild?

Following Peter Burman’s kind invitation, I joined the Guild in the hope of becoming more actively involved in conversations around art, decoration, nature, and the environment—subjects which are brought together so compellingly in the work and thought of John Ruskin. I am glad to join a group of like-minded scholars and enthusiasts, and look forward to contributing to and learning from the community.
